Magnet test
Can tell you: Whether the piece contains iron-based metal. Gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic. A magnet that sticks strongly rules out solid precious metal.
Does not establish: That the piece is genuine. Brass, copper, and many non-magnetic alloys will not attract a magnet. A piece that passes the magnet test could still be counterfeit.
Acid test
Can tell you: An approximate indication of karat based on how the metal reacts to different acid strengths.
Does not establish: That the piece is solid throughout. Acid testing only tests the surface. A gold-plated piece will pass an acid test on the surface. The test leaves a permanent mark that may require polishing to remove.
Electronic gold tester
Can tell you: A quick, non-damaging indication of karat for clean, flat surfaces.
Does not establish: Precise composition. Electronic testers can be fooled by plating, surface contamination, or irregular surfaces. Results should be treated as indicative, not definitive.
XRF (X-ray fluorescence)
Can tell you: Precise elemental composition of the surface — percentages of gold, silver, copper, and other metals.
Does not establish: What is underneath the surface. XRF only analyzes the outer layer. A heavy gold-plated piece will read as gold. For solid confirmation, the piece must be cut or drilled — which is destructive.
